Eldorado Promoting California Polo – Linfoot Clinic December 15th & 16th
A sunny day, clear blue sky, snow-capped mountains smiling down from the distance… What a great way to start the 2-day Corky & Kathy Linfoot Clinic at the Eldorado Polo Club. On Friday night all the participants joined the Linfoots for a “Meet & Greet” in the Cantina with pizza and drinks. An early start on Saturday had two groups alternating between lessons in the hitting cage with Corky, and Riding Instruction with Kathy. Saturday afternoon concentrated on more riding drills, throw-ins, and knock-in practice.The Clinic saw a nice turnout with 10 participants from all over California, and even a few from Canada. Veterans like Lyn & Herschel Cobb and Reg Whyte are improving their polo skills alongside beginners that heard about the Clinic and thought they’d give it a try. Up-and-coming players like Hank Uretz participated to learn from some of Polo’s greatest teachers and gain a new perspective on the sport.After a gourmet dinner at the Cantina tonight, it was early to bed and early to rise for another full day of instruction tomorrow. Topics like horse preparation, bridling & maintenance and game strategy were covered, along with 2 controlled game situations that Kathy filmed and reviewed with the participants.It’s exciting to see the enthusiasm of new players, as this whole new world is opened up to them – they could be the future Patrons of our sport and Eldorado is proud to be hosting this Clinic and contributing to the future of Polo in California. Eldorado would like to make this a yearly event, or even a bi-yearly event depending on the interest shown. Members, players, staff and the horses at Eldorado Polo Club are really excited about the 2013 season. The season is shaping up to be the most COMPETITIVE polo in the Desert. With Graham Bray at the helm, our field restoration efforts over the off season are proving to deliver great results, especially fields One, Four and International.The polo is shaping up to be fast, exciting and very competitive. We currently have seven teams registered in the 4 – 6 Goal and five teams in the 10 – 12 Goal for January with more teams confirmed to come on board in February and March.In the 10 – 12 Goal, we are pleased to welcome back Jenny Luttrell and her Cotterel Farms teams in both the 12 Goal and 6 Goal, Ron and Krista Bonaguidi’s Hanalei Bay also with teams in the 12 and 6. Geoff Palmer and his Antelope outfit are back along with John Rooney from Calgary Canada and his Northern Blizzard team. Chris Maloney’s Twin Palms makes a welcome return to Eldorado, teaming up with Triangle Bar Farms to form a very competitive team.The 4 – 6 Goal sees some very competitive outfits taking the field. Pat Powell returns from Calgary Canada with his Blazers team and Reg Whyte is also joining us again from north of the border. Dan Horn and Dan Walker are once again teaming up along with new addition, Leigh Brecheen, to form the Palm Desert team. Craig Steinke is making a comeback to Eldorado, teaming up with nutrition expert Colleen Wilson to form the Stormcat/Adeptus combo. Dr Rick Paicius is visiting Eldorado with his well organized Trinity crew along with David Flowers and Kim Garsed. Suzanne Figi has also brought her Gypsy Polo outfit to Eldorado this season to round out the January roster.We are also taking nominations for a Pro Pool league for those who are looking to have some fun with a bit of healthy competition. The Pro Pool will group 3 sponsors with a high goal pro to produce safe and structured polo whilst keeping the cost to a reasonable rate. The proposed format is $500 per weekend which includes tournament fees, pro fees and prizes.Eldorado is also pleased to welcome Rick Sears, USPA Professional Umpire, who will be joining us this season and keeping us all safe out on the fields. All umpires will also be required to wear helmets during matches in a move to raise safety standards.Geoff Palmer is gracious enough to host a Cantina BBQ Party on Friday January 25 at 5:30pm after the 12goal International Field games. The BBQ is open to all players in the 4-6 Goal and 10-12 Goal leagues as an opportunity for the players to get to know one another whilst not on the back of a horse. We are hoping to do more of these team sponsored parties throughout the season.The Polo Office is open so feel free to drop in and say hello to Graham, Debbie, Rob, Lacey and James, they are happy to answer any questions you may have. The winter polo forecast is calling for sunny skies, amazing fields, competitive, action packed polo, polo clinics, social events and so much more at THE ELDORADO POLO CLUB.You know the old saying “Rome wasn’t built in a day” well the same holds true for the Eldorado Polo Club. To make something truly special and rebuild it from the ground up takes patience and perseverance, make no mistake Eldorado polo Club is here to stay and truly special is what it will be! With the new Manager Graham Bray taking the reins many positive changes have already been taking place starting with the fields. 7000 tons of sand were put on the fields over the summer as well as the fields being aerated, deep tined and aggravated. This alone will be a huge improvement for the club. The exercise track has also undergone a major overhaul and had 12 inches of sand added to it, making for much improved footing and drainage. The facelift also includes a club wide clean up with tree trimming, barn reconstructing and other deferred maintenance items.The Eldorado Polo Club’s 2013 season is shaping up to be a great one. Eldorado is offering a full range of club activities for every level of polo enthusiast.There will be a very competitive 12 goal league.There will be an action packed 6 goal league.There will be a great 0 goal league as well as a coaching league.Eldorado Polo Club will also be hosting polo clinics which will teach polo knowledge and skills to beginners and pros alike.The Cantina and Clubhouse will also offer a variety of social events and team barbeques bringing families, players and friends together.Eldorado is setting the stage for the future of California polo and it has so much to offer everyone involved. Eldorado Polo Club is going back to the basics where the love of the game is first and foremost and fans and players can really enjoy everything this amazing sport has to offer 7 days a week. The Pacific Coast Governor's Cup is going back to Canada. For the third year in a row, a Canadian has won the tournament and this year it is Cam Clark and his Cam Clark Ford Polo Team. As a result, the Cup will call the Calgary Polo Club home until next spring.With Sunday's final set up as a round - robin with Clark, David Ragland's Deco Polo, and Ly Cobb's Coldwell Bamker Menlo doing battle, the first two chukkers were played by the eventual winners and Deco.With Jesse Bray leading the way, Clark was selling vehicles in a hurry and had a three goal lead after the first (3 - 0). The second was even on the scoreboard but not before Bray raised the lead to four in the early going. Deco got one back to come within three but that was as close as they would get - in spite a beauty from Ragland - and the 'game' was over with Clark winning by a score of 5 - 2.The next two periods would see Deco staying up to face Coldwell Banker Menlo. Once again Deco was slow at the start as the realtors took a very quick lead of two that dropped to one before the end of their first (2 - 1). The trend reversed in the second as Deco scored twice to just one for Cobb and Co. and the second 'game' ended in a tie at three.With Deco done, the car salesmen came back out in an attempt to outsell the realtors - not that they had to, as a tie would give them the trophy. Having to defeat Clark to win, Coldwell Banker came out quickly and posted an early lead but the the automobile business was still hot as Bray was once again selling and it was 3 - 1 Cam Clark after the first. Marcos Bignoli Jr. got hot in the second however, and the score was 3 - 3 with two minutes left in the second. Bray again struck and the the Canadian sponsored group was assured of victory with a lead of one and playing in the final 30 seconds. An open goal conversion - with five seconds on the clock - created a tie at four, but the title belonged to Clark and his sales force with two wins and three net goals. Coldwell Banker Menlo was the runner-up with two wins and zero net goals. Coming off a very strong 2011 season, capped by winning the Pacific Coast Governor’s Cup, Pat Powell and his 4 goal Blazers Polo Team had not made the winner’s circle in the first two tournaments of the 2012 campaign. Not that they hadn’t been close. The Blazers qualified third for the semi-finals in the EHV delayed January contest – and no semi played – and were runners-up in the February Veen Memorial.So, with Powell unable to play the Governor’s Cup, it was to be the Mack and Madelyn Jason Memorial if he was to win a title this season. Formerly the Madelyn Jason Memorial, Mack’s name was added after his passing earlier in the year.With the Blazers qualifying for the March 25 final, their opposition would be Lyn Cobb’s Coldwell Banker Menlo. With Cobb’s daughter, Madelyn, in town on spring break, it was Cobb’s decision that Madelyn Cobb (Mack and Madelyn’s granddaughter) would play instead of her mother.The Blazers – at 3.5 goals - were awarded a half goal on handicap, and Powell’s quarterback, Kyle Fargey, wasted little time and extended that lead to 2.5 in less than three minutes on two field goals. Coldwell Banker Menlo got one back on an open goal conversion from Jared Sheldon and the first ended with the Blazers leading 2.5 – 1.Two field goals from Sheldon to just an open goal counter from Fargey and it was 3.5 – 3 after the second chukker as CB Menlo came back.However, the third period was pretty much all Blazers as Jake Devane entered the courtroom and scored a pair from the field and Fargey scored on another open goal strike. Sheldon’s second penalty two counter gave the realtors some hope but it was now 6.5 – 4 in favor of the Powell quartet at the ‘half’.The Blazers were unable to score in the fourth, but the realtors couldn’t take advantage and were able to score only one – an open goal effort from Remey Muller and the lead was now 1.5 goals.Fargey scored a field goal in the fifth while his team completely shut down CB Menlo and the final was 7.5 – 5 and Powell had a title in 2012. Ron Mathison a Back to Back Winner in Skins

Different team name, somewhat different line-up, but the result was the same as 2011 for Ron Mathison in the 2012 Polo Skins Game - he won. With Marcello Rodriguez - Abbiati managing the team - known as Highwood - Mathison saddled up with Santiago Trotz, Jared Sheldon, and of course, Rodriquez - Abbiati himself.With Trotz and Sheldon coming off a strong Beal Memorial victory and available in March, it seemed like a 'no-brainer' for the financial wizard Mathison to agree with Rodriquez - Abbiati and 'do the deal' and hire the former pronghorns.Qualifying for the semi - finals, Highwood had to go to overtime to defeat Team Mansour to move on to the Skins Game itself. There, they would face Dan Horn's Palm Desert group who simply ran over Hanalei Bay in the other semi. Because of that one- sided victory, Horn along with Danny and Matthew Walker and Santigo Wulff were, in most peoples minds, the favorites - how could Highwood match-up with the Palm Desert horsepower?It was apparent from the start that the Highwood horse management plan would take care of any concerns regarding that aspect of the game. Having to give up a half goal on handicap (for the first Skin only) the Canadian invaders jumped out to a fast start and put early pressure on the desert folks. As a result, a pony goal and an open goal conversion from Trotz, quickly allowed Highwood to lead 2 - .5. Matt Walker got one back via a penalty number two and the first $4.000 Skin went to Highwood at 2 - 1.5.Horn and Co. came out strong in the second and forced Highwood into an error that allowed Wulff to capitalize on a penalty two opportunity. Trotz, using his head to get his horse properly positioned, got that back in short order. Not to be denied, Wulff, running under Matt Walker's long passes, scored his second of the contest and Palm Desert banked the second $4,000 by a count of 2 - 1.Not used to giving up a lead of any kind, Mathison scored from the field to start Highwood's second 'victory' and they continued to apply heavy pressure in the Palm Desert end as Rodriguez - Abbiati scored on a penalty four attempt. Matt Walker was able to score from the field but the third money went north. $8,000 - $4.000 in favor of Highwood (2 - 1 )at the half.The trend of Highwood getting a lead of two (first and third skins) continued in the fourth as Trotz nailed a penalty four and Rodriguez - Abbiati counted from the field before Wulff could reply with a field goal for Palm Desert. Trotz got the two goal bulge back on a penalty two from the spot but the desert dwellers came back and applied pressure of their own with Matt Walker converting a number two from the spot and Danny Walker notching a field goal and the first carryover of the game was created - $8,000 available in the fifth.The fifth saw Highwood score the first two goals for the fourth time in the game as Trotz converted another open goal offering and Sheldon, who made things happen the entire afternoon, scored on a nice run. With Palm Desert unable to reply, the $8,000 was Highwoods and they now led $16,000 - $4,000.With the final dollar amount now won by Mathison and Co., Palm Desert, characteristicly, didn't slow down and came out strong in the final skin looking to win the overall score - they were behind 10 - 7.5 - and, for only the second time, scored the first goal on a 60 yard conversion by Wulff.
